I love stories that capture this moment in a person’s life—when you’re no longer a child but not yet an adult and possess a naive confidence about the world around you。 This Greek classic （first published in 1946） follows three sisters during three summers when the youngest， Katerina， fits this mold。 As she ages and matures， she grapples with what she wants her future to look like as she observes the lives around her。 It’s a complex portrait of ordinary lives in a simpler time—a good read for fo I love stories that capture this moment in a person’s life—when you’re no longer a child but not yet an adult and possess a naive confidence about the world around you。 This Greek classic （first published in 1946） follows three sisters during three summers when the youngest， Katerina， fits this mold。 As she ages and matures， she grapples with what she wants her future to look like as she observes the lives around her。 It’s a complex portrait of ordinary lives in a simpler time—a good read for found solitude on a hot summer day。“There was no moon， and the sky was full of stars。 Each star was a world。 It made me crazy， thinking about all that motion around the sun， and that human beings had seen it all and studied it。 Amalia would of course say that was nonsense since we hadn’t yet managed to make life on our own planet bearable for everyone。 Someday I’ll have to sit down and think about what Amalia says。” 。。。more

Wow， what a hidden gem！ What a travesty it would have been had this book never been translated from Greek into English。 The prose was GORGEOUS， ethereal， and dream-like。 Beautiful metaphors， nostalgic。 Took me back to my 16 year old self， languishing through hot summers and dreaming of boys， as girls that age do。

This was PAINFUL for me to read - to the extent I would have given up if I hadn’t been reading for a book club。 I think there were some interesting relationships or poignant events buried in there somewhere， but I couldn’t really find it in the stream of consciousness narration。 The style was hard enough to follow in the narrator’s voice， but once the point of view started skipping around too I was completely sunk。

Three Summers is set in the 1930s before the Second World War and the sisters do all seem to live an idyllic life。 At the start of the novel， so during the first summer， they are twenty， eighteen and sixteen。 They spend their time lying in the fields， talking to one another about their thoughts and dreams， and also generally getting the attention of the young me they know。 They also think about their separated parents and other family dramas。 They live with their mother， aunt and grandfather whi Three Summers is set in the 1930s before the Second World War and the sisters do all seem to live an idyllic life。 At the start of the novel， so during the first summer， they are twenty， eighteen and sixteen。 They spend their time lying in the fields， talking to one another about their thoughts and dreams， and also generally getting the attention of the young me they know。 They also think about their separated parents and other family dramas。 They live with their mother， aunt and grandfather while their father， who is both a banker and an inventor， lives in Athens。I found Three Summers quite slow going。 At times that suited the story as it evokes the feeling of lazy summer days where the days blur into one， but on the other hand it made it more difficult to connect with the characters and on the whole I didn’t really care about them。Maria was the sister that was the easiest to understand， she knows what she wants and decides who and when she’s going to marry quickly。 Infanta is more reserved and at some points I wondered if she was written to be asexual or aromantic because of how distant she was towards the young man who clearly likes her。 It could have been natural shyness or nerves but some of her reactions to strong emotions sometimes seemed more extreme for that。 Katerina is more bold than her sisters and her curiosity and actions often made her mother despair。 She doesn’t seem to fit in this family and while she does say she falls in love with a neighbour， it’s hard to tell if she really has and she’s not using him as a gateway to adventure。The writing in Three Summers is quite flowery and paints vivid pictures of the old house and the surrounding countryside， but that sort of thing isn’t really for me and it wasn’t keeping my attention by the end of book。 Maybe it’s because I did find myself skim reading the last section of the book， which was about the events of the third summer， but I did find it difficult to keep track of some of the friends and neighbours， how they were connected to the sisters and what they thought of them。Because it’s set just across three summers and is more of a slice of life type story， there are some things that are open ended and potential relationships not yet pursued which is a little frustrating but that’s the nature of this kind of story。 Three Summers is a coming of age story and it’s one that fans of period dramas may like a lot。 It has the will they/won’t they relationships but with more of a stiff upper lip as young women weren’t allowed to be forthright with their wants in the 1930s。 。。。more

Being generous with 3 stars。 There are lovely passages that bring the countryside of Greece right into your vision。 Then the narrative of three wealthy sisters and several older women and their love lives （or lack thereof） takes you right out。 This book is called Three Summers and is part of the NYRB classics。

A fost o surpriza sa descopar aceasta carte。Am trecut peste design-ul neinspirat al copertii （anul 1990） dar am gasit in ea ceea ce imi place mie : o familie （3 surori） ，un secret， o gradina， peisajul de vara al Greciei si o poveste care le leaga pe toate。 Ce m-a deranjat totusi a fost ritmul acestei carti， uneori prea alert si niste personaje introduse cam inutil。。。asa sa dea bine，sa aiba de toate。 Dar lectura acestei carti iti induce atmosfera de vacanta si de tinerete。

Candy Floss。 Light airy， full of summer。 Dark undertones that are not explored。 Writing confused by changing viewpoints and chronology。 A delightful fantasy that tells us nothing very much。 In 1946 it was a ray of sunshine in a very dark world。 Camus loved it， probably because he was tired of listening to Simone de Beauvoir who had a firm grip on reality。

Δεν είναι τυχαίο που «Τα ψάθινα καπέλα» μεταφράστηκαν σε τόσες γλώσσες （με τη γαλλική μετάφραση να συντελείται τέσσερα μόλις χρόνια μετά από την 1η έκδοση） και που αποσπάσματά τους χρησιμοποιούνται έκτοτε ως εκπαιδευτικό υλικό σε αρκετές τάξεις Α/θμιας και Β/θμιας εκπαίδευσης。Το έργο αποτελεί μιαν ωδή στη διαδικασία της διάπλασης και μια σπουδή συνάμα。 Τα πάθη， οι σκέψεις και όλο το συναισθηματικό φάσμα της εφηβείας αποτυπώνονται με ελκυστική απλότητα και με ποιητική γραφή。 Στις σελίδες του βιβλ Δεν είναι τυχαίο που «Τα ψάθινα καπέλα» μεταφράστηκαν σε τόσες γλώσσες （με τη γαλλική μετάφραση να συντελείται τέσσερα μόλις χρόνια μετά από την 1η έκδοση） και που αποσπάσματά τους χρησιμοποιούνται έκτοτε ως εκπαιδευτικό υλικό σε αρκετές τάξεις Α/θμιας και Β/θμιας εκπαίδευσης。Το έργο αποτελεί μιαν ωδή στη διαδικασία της διάπλασης και μια σπουδή συνάμα。 Τα πάθη， οι σκέψεις και όλο το συναισθηματικό φάσμα της εφηβείας αποτυπώνονται με ελκυστική απλότητα και με ποιητική γραφή。 Στις σελίδες του βιβλίου οι ήρωες σκέφτονται， επιλέγουν， ωριμάζουν -και ο αναγνώστης βρίσκει συνεχώς αφορμές να δει την αντανάκλασή του στους χαρακτήρες και να εισχωρήσει σε βάθος στην κινητήριο δύναμη της ύπαρξής τους。 Η Λυμπεράκη， με την ποιητική της γραφή， έχει την ευχέρεια να μην προσδιορίζει φανερά， αλλά αντίθετα να υπονοεί γοητευτικά， τα ψυχογραφήματα των χαρακτήρων της και τους διακριτούς σταθμούς της ωρίμανσής τους。 Ο εσωτερικός αυτός φωτισμός του θέματος της εξέλιξης καθιστά αυτό το βιβλίο ιδανικό ανάγνωσμα και για ενήλικες。 Δικαιολογείται έτσι η σύσσωμη επιλογή των κριτικών， τα ψάθινα καπέλα， να συμπεριληφθούν στο corpus του λογοτεχνικού είδους Bildungsroman （μυθιστόρημα μαθητείας）， το οποίο αφορά έργα που έχουν γραφτεί για την εφηβεία και όχι αναγκαστικά για τους εφήβους。Το έργο βρίσκεται σε έναν εποικοδομητικό διάλογο με το Bildungsroman， αξιοποιώντας πολλά από τα στοιχεία του και αποσιωπώντας άλλα。 Το αποτέλεσμα τελικώς είναι να το εμπλουτίζει。 Η ιδιομορφία του σε σχέση με το αρχετυπικό πρότυπο του Bildungsroman έγκειται στο ότι， ενώ περιλαμβάνει όλα τα κλασικά στοιχεία， δηλαδή την πορεία προς την ωρίμανση， τον παράγοντα περιβάλλον， τον αυτοπροσδιορισμό， τη σύγκρουση και τον συμβιβασμό， αυτά δεν αντιπροσωπεύουν έναν κεντρικό， ατομικό χαρακτήρα αλλά πολλούς。 Ο συλλογικός ήρωας， επομένως， για τη Λυμπεράκη δεν έχει ούτε ηλικία ούτε φύλο。 Τοιουτοτρόπως εξετάζεται η νεανικότητα πέραν της ηλικίας， ως εν δυνάμει χαρακτηριστικό του καθενός， κι όχι μόνο των νέων。 Εύστοχες αποκλίσεις από τον ειδολογικό κανόνα， σαν κι αυτήν， καθιστούν αυτό το βιβλίο εκτός από ένα ενδιαφέρον ανάγνωσμα， και έναν επάξιο εκπρόσωπο του Bildungsroman。 。。。more
